Knees

Knees

These are my knees on 3 July 2014 when they were first injured. Note the difference between the left and right knee.

A twist, and “Wham!”
There went my knees to the ground
With my left knee puffed like aRohan fish
From blood red, to mystical purple,
To night-dark black

And there comes the centenarian
Trapped in a body of a twenty-year-old.

The legs, making circles to the music,
Dragged into irregularity
And soon, even climbing the stairs
Is a gymnastic stint.

The doctor saw that Rohan fish, and said,
“That’s bad and bad,
I’ll give you some pills to go.”

Only after three days
Where my feet stayed like rocks. Still.
Only with a pair of helping hands
Did I get to dragged the rocks
To the ambulance

Only to find out
CLOTTED BLOOD IN THE KNEES
Almost ready to render me on the surgery bed

And return with
The atrocity of swallowing
White PILLS

And virtually grounded
No jumping, no running, no playing!

Ah, so much for attempting something done by
A SIX YEAR OLD-
A handstand! I bet everyone can do it?

Now, they can squat and jump
With a big fat creamy fluffy doughnut
Around me! (Gasp)
Pajamas became tights
Chopsticks to tree trunks
And two dumplings on my face!

Please friends, treat your knees well more than money
With money but without knees,
There you go, live in a mountain of gold
With a pair of wild eyes going nowhere

And if a stunt is what you do,
GRAB A TRAINER to get it right!
Or, just stick to ball games and jogging.

But without you, friends
My legs will be hard as rocks
Dead and still
And under the knife
I have to go
And faint under!

I am a haemophobe.

Fried Rice Again!

Good afternoon everyone...

I am very happy because I did something...

FRIED RICE!

Ha, probably you guys will be thinking: "Duh, it is just fried rice! Nothing special!"

Well, now you know this blogger here. I tend to get really happy over things that I do totally by myself, even if they are simple things like making a salad and frying rice. Being able to do things by myself means that I am a step closer towards independence.

Best of all, this time, I get to fry rice without egg a.k.a. chicken period!

I like to load up my food with vegetables. Here, I use cabbage, French beans, monkey head mushroom, tomato and one sort of green which I do not know how to call it (In Hokkien, I call it "kiu mo cai"), with some garlic, soy sauce and sesame oil as seasoning.

I think I need not go into the details of frying rice, no?

Here is my fried rice! The portion was just nice for me, but I found it a little bland. In fact, I reduced the amount of soy sauce used to cut down on sodium intake, so I think I need some time to adapt to the taste of low-sodium food. The rice is not too dry and I can feel the crunch in every mouthful, thanks to the cabbage. Who says only deep-fried food can be crunchy?

One thing I love about home-cooked fried rice is that I can always choose my own ingredients and control the nutritional value. I find the commercial fried rice to be so oily that I can squeeze out the oil using two spoons. Besides, the amount of veggies in the rice is pathetic. I should consider myself lucky if I can find three decent-sized veggie leaves in my plate. The portion size is also huge, which means that I end up with loads of oil and refined white rice. Refined carbohydrates and fats are certainly a recipe for catastrophic health!

Frying rice is a good way to use up leftover rice and learn cooking because it is really easy. One can get really creative with fried rice, otherwise there will not be food like "Nasi Goreng USA", "Nasi Goreng Kampung", Apple fried rice, pineapple fried rice, etc. Fry it to your heart's content, but enjoy this food in moderation.

P/S: Other ideas to use up leftovers and incorporate vegetables into your diet (for those who are too busy for a decadent meal or those who are novices in cooking, like me)
  • Fried noodles
  • Soup noodles-this is healthy because it has less fat and sodium
  • Oat porridge. Oats does not have to be always sweet.
  • The lazy pasta-just cook pasta and stir-fry or roast the veggies separately. Toss into the pasta and drizzle it with some olive oil, or sesame oil for an Oriental kick.

Of course, the ways of using up leftovers and consuming more veggies are endless. The sky is the limit.

The road of life is rough and rocky. We all face challenges, most of the time. It can be just a pebble by the road, or a tall, gigantic snowy mountain, but it always make us feel like giving up or giving in to out fate. However, the moment you feel like surrendering is often the moment that you are closest to success. You have sacrificed your youth, your energy and time, and you even vigorously prepare yourself physically and mentally to climb this snowy mountain. Just when you are about to reach the peak, the freezing weather and uneven roads called you to surrender your past endeavours, stop and descend. Thus, you can never see the beautiful pink clouds and morning sun. Is that not a waste?

Those who are preparing for the examination, all the best, and persevere!

Here is a breakfast for you, made with lots of love. ^_^

Study Week? Nah...

EXAMS? Oh no, I barely even touched anything! Having performed badly in my assignments, I cannot help but to push myself during this precious 5-days study week. I don't think I am pushing myself that far too, otherwise I wouldn't have been blogging here in the icy-cold library, with my frozen fingers shivering and stomping on the keyboard with that last little ounce of energy.

So, here goes my study week...

Monday marks the beginning of the study week. A good breakfast marks a good start, right? He he. I gave my study week a sweet start with this 20-minute breakfast. 20 minutes, yes, because I factor in the time to wash and cut the fruits, nuts and nori sheets, apart from preparing the oats.

It is really tasty with the sweetness of the fruits, savoury taste of the nori sheets, crunch of the nuts and, not to forget, the creamy oats base. At least it quelled my cravings for a big fat slice of cheesecake and extra sleep!

It seems like I can somehow study better during the final week leading to the exam, probably due to the extra stress and push factor? I'm not sure. I can UNDERSTAND the concepts well but fail to remember the facts and the precise names of the theories. God help me. I want to score at least better than my 3.82 last year, but, can I?

Tuesday is another sweet start. I think my post is more on oat story and food (Yes, I LOVE food, quality ones of course) than studying LOL.

I was very happy to be invited to a cafe called 静思书轩 a.k.a.Jing Si Books and Cafe (if I'm not mistaken) at Church Road by Yin Fang, my junior. We went there with her room mate, Shin Xuan and a senior, Milo. The Cafe was just a stone's throw away from the jetty. It looks like there are much more treasures to be unearth beneath the main channel to flee home. The environment there is a stark difference compared to that of the stuffy hostel room. It was serene with the fragrance of tea floating in the air, light music and comfortable seats. Best of all, the environment there is really Buddhist okay?(Duh,the cafe is opened by Tzu-Chi volunteers)

Unfortunately I did not take any picture there. STUDIES COME FIRST so there is no time for me to wander around and take pictures of it. The pleasant environment gave me the extra boost to read further and cram more information into my head, minus the boredom and stuffiness. Plus, there is no bed so I did not even think about sleeping.

Fast forward towards lunchtime and we went to the Quay Cafe nearby. It was Wesak Day but we neither participated in any procession nor pray, so we decided that the only way to celebrate was to BECOME VEGETARIANS ON THAT DAY, so a vegetarian lunch that is! The cafe was operated by Tzu-Chi volunteers too, and it was almost no-frills (i.e.all those romantic music, waiters teaching you to hold cutlery, thick menus that make the trees cry for mercy); just simple and inviting. A variety of food was sold there, from local favourites such as "Chicken" rice and Bak Kut Teh to international food like Japanese Bento. There was not many choices but the choices were sufficient enough to make a hungry diner happy. Plus, the price was reasonable.

My Healthy Lunch Set (RM7.50). It was really... GREEN. I chose this mainly because of the price and I need rice to feel satisfied. The portion is very healthy too-for ladies.

The crunchy sweet potato fries (RM4.00/plate). I love this but it gave me a terrible stomach pain afterwards, probably because I eat fried food once in a blue moon.

Shin Xuan's bento (RM15). Soup+jelly+Udon noodles+4 pieces of sushi+pickled ginger+sweet potato fries+wasabi dipping.
I was glad that I did not order this, considering the ginormous size. However, I must admit that the sushi is awesome and large enough, unlike the eeny-meeny tiny ones in conventional sushi stores which are so small that they can be swallowed.

Yin Fang's Quay Rice (RM7.50). Might have to try this next time...

Milo's hotpot (RM10). I forgot the name for this, but again, it was very huge. The pot was LOADED with mushrooms, bean curd pockets and bean curds with noodles on the side. It's healthy but of course, be sure to take a friend or two if you are to eat this!
The rest of the time were spent in the cafe(duh). We studied and chatted over issues in college, along with refills after refills of tea. By the way, all of us had rose tea. At RM5 per pot with endless refills, it is definitely worth relishing! I doubt anyone can refill that for too many times anyway as the fragrant aroma was so relaxing that it beckoned visitors to take their time to read, think, reflect on themselves and appreciate the finer things in life.

We left at five and took a brief walk around that area, including the Indian street before heading back to the campus. I want to go back to the cafe again and probably satiate my cravings for some hot and spicy Indian food too?

He he.

I had a super low fat dinner for that day, but low fat did not equal to low calories. This time, I had some rice with dessert. Yay!

By the way, the rice was 香积饭, some sort of instant rice bought at the cafe which came with dried vegetables. It was sold at RM18 per 5-pack package. It is delicious but I advise you to pump it up with something else such as raisins, cashews or some other vegetables if you are to make it a meal, unless if you truly eat like a bird. ;)

That's all for now. As you can see, it is a very short post. My fingers are screaming for mercy!

I still have a lot to post, and things to share, but to save my fingers and grades, I will see you later, okay?

Study Week is for studying, with enjoyment together. Studying like a robot amounts to...nothing.

All the best to all the students!

Life is Simple

As we first opened our eyes
to see the light;
As we first opened our ears
to hear mummy's voice;
As we first opened our mouth
and cry;

Our voyage begins
A voyage from Mum's Cradle
To Never-Ending Land

Brains and brawns are we
just like our non-human friends around;
God gave us the faith, the hope
that we can give rainbows and build bridges
to make this world a Utopia.

He gave us special brains as a gift
so languages we create to speak
and to pass down to our children and grandchildren;
ideas and logics we manifest
to create good livelihood, but

Our life ain't as simple.

As the trees and flowers and shrubs
grow strong from the ground
felicitate under the warmth of the sun
taste the nectar from dew drops

The land animals roam free and wild
across hills and savannahs;
The hummingbirds, magpies and parrots reate melodies
and sing in Mother Nature's choir.
The fish danced in the clear blue rivers
and deep blue seas, along with red shrimps and crabby crabs
while Mother Oyster painstakingly produces
Nature's jewels.

And Man, the Rulers of the World
pay to live with every single cent,
to rewrite God's prescription and ode to live
into a version man fancy.

For the luscious candies of nature grown
underwent surgeries and genetic modifications
before slapping them as being super-healthy.
Those, hand-created by God, freshly from the ground
bear the burden of an extra adjective:
"ORGANIC"
with the price-tag triple of that of their counterparts'
and send goosebumps down the laymen's spine.
Where is "ORGANIC" food before World War Two?
None, because ALL food is pure and natural
without the burden of an extra adjective.

The food, the skin care, the house-wash
Once attainable with oil and soil
Now required a millionwillion ingredients
with a list longer than a professor's thesis
Improved livelihoods and civilization? Yes-
Obesity, cancer, allergies, heart attack
Are our bosom friends now.
So cheap, so fragrant, so beautiful, so dear
Yet deadly
As we put these into our bodies to save money,
Our poor bodies are screaming for mercy.

Juicy, thick fat steak
Becomes a sign of social status.
Got milk? How about some pus and hormones with that?
Got egg? Oh, yummy hen period
produced with the expense of the happiness of the hens.
Why harm our animal friends? To nourish?
We gnaw the nerves and muscles off our FRIENDS
and bathed in their blood
and make merry out of a big fat roasted turkey
when there they are in a massive concentration camp
spanning hundreds of years, with their wings clipped and feet bound
to see their family members torn apart from them
every DAY.

We want to move-no more.
These are the days where
Extracting petroleum hydrocarbons for PET,
polymerization, producing PET pellets, stretch blow molding
cooling down the mold and checking for leftover PET
are deemed easier than
PROCESING STEEL, MOLDING THEM,
SELLING THEM AND WASHING THEM FOR ANOTHER USAGE
because we are disposable. We eat, we sleep, we wear, we poo, we throw.

And why the fur, hides and leather for clothes and arm candies?
Why, we are born with our own skin and
insecurity and lack of confidence prevail
so much that
we need to hide under others' skins and coats
the fox, the minks, the rabbits, the tigers, the leopards, the goats?
and we mass produce them through concentration camps
and process it with heavy metal just to rid bacteria and all that jazz
slap a 10K price tag onto it
and have them making their ways into fashion runways,
a symbol of success, and a symbol of pride
when we can have them cheap and easy with
something without flesh and blood-cotton? cool and fresh,

Why we need to pitch knives and swords
against our friends? Why the bloodshed
for a common land? We are all homo sapiens
with 99% similar DNA. It's the skin colour, location and brains
that set us apart, apparently.
For resources and an uber race,
we set our friends'house on fire
and deport them as slaves or to their ends
and have to pay the price of war
and to sign neverending treaties in the end...

WHY THE HASSLE OF IT AT ALL?

Life is meant to be simple and easy for all
As long as we walk the path
as prescribed by God because
He has painted a picture of life
and designed the seas, the mountains, the plains,
the plants, the animals, and the humans, supposed to be the smartest.
With our brains, we should have make the world of better place
but instead we stabbed against Him and made him cry in fury
and end up with a circle of malaise

260414 Wonderful Saturday!

****English post today for Maximum Typing Speed and Liberation of feelings and Ideas*****

I am supposed to write on my BIG (Bina Insan Guru) Programme or even rant on something else first, but since they are really long, and I have work waiting for me but just can't wait to talk, so yea, I will talk about today first!

I will talk about the rest, tomorrow perhaps. Right now, I hope you can understand my mini posts because I need to be a hermit later with my faithful books and unfinished story waiting for me.

Today is a Saturday. Duh. Simple Saturday? Sleazy Saturday? Sunny Saturday? I don't know, but I can only say that today left me recharged with new aims and power for my life ahead, along with some pitfalls.

NUMBER 1: VEGAN DAY
I have always wanted to become a full-time vegan ever since I become a lacto-ovo vegetarian, i.e. a vegetarian who consumes eggs and dairy, since the previous year. The more I read up on vegetarianism along with food and nutrition, the more I realized that the egg and dairy industry are equally as cruel because:
  • Both hens and female cows are literally imprisoned just to produce eggs and milk.
  • Both are killed when their production levels drop.
  • In both industries, the males are culled, i.e. the male chicks are killed at birth as they are worthless in the egg industry; the male calves are separated from the milk cows to be raised as veal.

Those are my brief understandings about the egg and dairy industry. Feel free to read up for more.

Yet, I have not give them up completely due to social and convenience reasons (I cannot cook by myself!). I have repeated this umpteen times so I am skipping the entire essay on this. Today, I decided to alternate my vegan days and vegetarian days. On vegan days, I skip my Milo, Horlicks, eggs and biscuits. They are my largest addictions so not eating them-even for just one day-was quite a challenge. I am happy to say that I DID IT!

My Food Diary Today is as follows:

Breakfast: Ecobrown Brown Rice cereal beverage, 2 apples, some almonds, some mixed seeds, 5 cherry tomatoes, ginger

Snack: 8 prunes

Lunch: Rice, tofu, spinach, ladies' fingers, eggplant. I should thank my lucky stars as the  "Nasi Campur" stall actually sold tofu today-first time I've ever seen. Probably God understands that I want to be a vegan today.

Snack: 2 veggie buns. Dairy and egg free! It's really rare. Well, it is "Bread for Life" which I got from an Organic store in Tesco. It is on the expensive side but it keeps me really full, unlike the conventional bread which leaves me hungry half hour after eating it!

Pre-Exercise: Some raisins

Dinner: Oats, 2 apples, 3 walnuts, some cherry tomatoes and a dash of ground cinnamon.

Dessert cravings must be satisfied but I want to neither waste my money on commercial desserts with questionable ingredients nor add inches on my waistline. Apple and cinnamon just do the trick perfectly, but the combo alone will never do justice for my stomach.

Yay for not screaming for not drinking Milo today! I would like to see vegan chocolate drink powder in the market soon as chocolate drinks give me that boost I need before exercise without weighing me down.

NUMBER 2: TALK ON PRONUNCIATION

Hmm... I am not sure what to talk about for this as I was literally in dreamland. Not because the speaker was monotonous, but rather, I found that I just could not sit still for more than an hour. Plus, I made a huge mistake by treating myself to a sweet drink at night the day before and not being able to fall asleep until midnight. By hook or by crook I have to hit the sack by eleven from now on, and wake up super-early if I have endless work.

I learned about the importance of using a fun approach for children while teaching pronunciation, such as through software and nursery rhymes. Though, I am not sure on teaching rhymes like "Three Blind Mice" and 'Mary Mary Quite Contrary" to kids as they have a really morbid history-again, just read up on it! Nursery rhymes, though meaningless, can teach children about rhymes and ways to arrange words into sentences. I think I know my next steps-to download videos on pronunciation and grab a copy of the Sky Pronunciation software off the Language Department since I have to brush up on my pronunciation at the same time as well.

Sadly, his explanation on the Bingo way to teach pronunciation beats me totally. I wonder how am I going to teach properly, or, basically, be an adult who has no problem to sit still, though I will happily take long walks or run errands rather than having my butt glued onto the chair-and-burn-for hours!

NUMBER 3: BABY TAPIR PERFORMANCE AND THEATRE AT PENANGPAC

I actually volunteered to participate int his performance, thinking that I would be doing Choral Speaking. I couldn't be more wrong-I had to ACT! GOD HELP ME!

Seriously, I am a total goof at acting okay. Spastic movements, emotionless face, monotonous voice... I can really bag myself Razzie Awards for being the worst actress, ever. What could I do? As a teacher, I have to morph into an artist, a singer, a dancer, an ACTRESS... to make lessons interesting. Hopefully I can at least show emotions when I act before I graduate.

Anyway, I embraced this opportunity as a chance for me to learn to act and interact with children, because I need to teach children languages, and I believe that no child will learn well with a teacher who behaves like a robot or has a mortifying, deep voice. I love such activities as well. In this case, the storytelling session was held in conjunction with the Tapir Day.The Tapir, an endangered Malaysian animal, is the focus. Anything related to fitness, Buddhism, environment and animal rights surely interest me. I believe that animals are our friends and should be taken care of in any way, unless if they harm us of course, such as cockroaches.

Besides, I get to go to Straits Quay-for the second time in my life. I fell in love with the place ever since my first visit there with my senior last year for a theatre. Before that, Angus, my classmate, kept firing up my emotions and imaginations on that British-style splendour by the beach by telling me how beautiful and romantic the place was. I have absolutely nothing to have romance on because I am enjoying my singlehood right now from birth and being a kid-at-heart, duh. I just want to go there for the beauty of the building and the scenery by the beach.

I was grateful for being able to play my role and entertain young children. Our performance was prepared for merely a week before this big day and I kept getting reprimanded for being emotionless and a monotonous voice. I want to improve on it, especially since to me, being scolded in front of my peers is a huge humiliation. I envy those who are born actors and actresses and can blend into their roles well. I played as Mrs Pigeon, the mother of pigeons but I was unsure if I was motherly enough in the play. First time try, first time know. Haha. Sorry for my broken English here.

The hallway at Penangpac. Pictured here is the Art Exhibition where the drawings by children dedicated to Tapir was exhibited and sold.

Le me during rehearsal

After the performance, we watched a children's theater on the Tapir. In that story, the tapirs were  discriminated due to their physical characteristics which were distinct from the other animals, e.g. ostriches, monkeys and elephants. They were reprimanded by the Jungle Queen because they did not respect mutual differences and individualities.

I was astounded by the theatrical effect and the variety of dances, along with the abilities of the performances to bring out the soul of the animals. What caught my eye though, was the fact that part of the performances were the blind. Performing must be very challenging for the blind children because they could only rely on their senses and hearing to navigate. Hats off. I am indeed am ungrateful brat to complain for my goofiness-I must take the initiative to improve on it instead.

Well, what started out as a mini post ended up to be quite long and took me slightly more than an hour! Words cannot describe my Saturday today. This explains why I love Fridays and Saturdays: the former  as an immediate break from class and a day for me to enjoy treats; the latter a huge breathing space for me to let loose and participate in the activities which itnerest me and allow me to learn and develop.

Till then for now!

Happy Sunday everyone!
