I'll break this down into many parts as usual, since I find it extremely difficult to remember everything at a time. No drafting involved, so I apologize for the broken language yeah.
PART 1: A NEW LIFE IN PENANG
I could even recall my last breakfast before leaving for Penang: Tuna bread. Simple as that. Somehow perhaps I might be living in Taiping no more, or perhaps I will, or... AAARRRGGGHHH!!!
The thought of leaving my quaint little Rain Town after almost eighteen years was infeasible indeed. The future was not for me to see-I will just have to walk through it. Fortunately Taiping is not too far off from my campus. I felt that the tuna bread was tastier than usual. Sweet and tangy. What was this?
It was almost 7 am when we left for Penang. My head was spinning faster and faster as Taiping gradually left me behind. However, it was for my future I left that day, 25 June 2012. I constantly told myself:
TO BE AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHER WHO PLEDGED THE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE PROMISE OF ERADICATING MANGLISH WHICH WAS DEEPLY ROOTED AMONG MALAYSIANS.
I was astonished when I noticed that the vehicles actually moved across the Penang Bridge. What luck! We were used to the immense traffic jam across the bridge in which all vehicles had to inch their way there. Now, at least dad could drive at 40 km/h there. At least!
Donned in a white baju kurung paired with a black kain kurung, I tiptoed my way into the campus, known as Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Pulau Pinang (IPGKPP) with my parents. I spotted only a few of my age with anxiety distinctly written on their faces, all donned in black and white as instructed prior to admission into college, and bringing along piles of files and an X-ray film with them.
We asked our way and headed straight to the students' hall to wait for registration. Yes, there were only 39 of us for this batch, which is in fact the smallest batch of intake in history. There were 19 students for Science (SJK (T) category) and 20 of us TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) students for the SJK (C) category.
#In case if you are wondering:
SJK (T) stands for Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil), which means a national Tamil vernacular school.
SJK (C) stands for Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina), which means a national Chinese vernacular school.
Alas, there were only twelve of us aspiring English language teachers whom showed up. A Second-Batch on the way this time, perhaps?
While waiting, we got to know each other while parents from various corners of Malaysia chatted gaily. Several students who graduated in pride from Jit Sin High School (The top school in Province Wellesley or Seberang Perai, which is the mainland of Penang), a sprightly lad who just finished his A-Levels in Law, two from Sungai Petani, one from boarding school, a pint-sized, cute looking girl who flew all the way from Miri, and best of all...
Two other Perakians, especially ONE GUY FROM THE SAME HOMETOWN!!! (Well, going home will be easier then! )
We waited for quite some time before get called in to complete our procedure for registration, from handing in copies of documents, getting the documents checked under the stern eyes of the lecturers to paying the fees, it was annoyingly time-consuming!
Registration 报到!!! |
#One such rule is that we can only afford to fail an exam once and resit it. Fail the resit and we will get the BOOT!!!
