The Hunger Games!

Welcome to the 74th Annual Hunger Games!!! Fight or you'll die an eminent death!! Ha ha. The reward: A handsome feast of food.

Okay, I will do a super-simple, Sharon Ng Huey Yuek's version of the review of this action-packed science fiction thriller, The Hunger Games. Being a total workaholic(for real? You are always Facebooking!) , I was more than thrilled when I was invited to watch this movie with my friends. Seriously, I am quite picky when it comes to watching movies, you know. Lovey-dovey movies, movies featuring nothing but FIGHTS, Adult movies... Oh please, you are better off volunteering than inviting me to watch these! Ha ha!

By the way, I might borrow some ideas from Wikipedia, since I could not remember the story completely. Rest assured, the review will be at least 75% in my simple language. XD

At times, I even dream of becoming a professional movie critic, obviously as a part time job. Sitting back on the velvet couch and enjoying movies, Scrutinizing every single scene in the movie, the stars that strut along every single place, etc. , and get paid for quality reviews! What more can one wish for? But, CAN I?

Let's get the story started... (drum rolls)

#Only In English yea. Sorry peeps! (Well, this review took me a whole day to complete it! Imagine this in TWO languages. XD I need to squeeze my brain out for essays, help design blog materials, and how about the acknowledgement and poem? A scary time warp indeed! :P)

The nation of Panem, formed from a post-apocalyptic North America, comprises of a wealthy Capitol and twelve surrounding districts which are less privileged. A boy and a girl are selected from each district via the annual lottery to participate in the deadly Hunger Games, as a punishment for previous rebellion against the Capitol by the districts. The Hunger Games is indeed an event in which the participants, known as "tributes" must battle out in an arena controlled by the Capitol until there is only one survivor left.

In the coal-mining region of District 12, Katniss Everdeen, 16, volunteers for the 74th Annual Hunger Games in place of her 12-year-old sister, Primrose Everdeen. She was the first volunteer in that region. Peeta Mellark, who once gave Katniss burnt bread when her family was starving, was selected as well.

The duo were taken to the Capitol where their drunken mentor, Haymitch Abermathy, directed then to observe and learn the talents of the other tributes. Their stylist, Cinna even dressed them in black suits set with synthetic flames to "impress the crowd" during the entrance parade. During a pre-games interview, Katniss was introduced as the "girl in flames" and spoke shyly. However, Peeta reveals his affection for Katniss unexpextedly, which drives Katniss in fury as she believes this to be a tactic to gain crucial audience support for themselves, as they may "sponsor" tributes with gifts of food, medicine, and tools.

All twenty-four tributes had to display their skills in using weapons in the Pre-Games, such as sword and archery. The Games kicked off as they were sent off to a special spot assigned by the Capitol, with half of the tributes die within the first eight hours. Meanwhile, Katniss escaped into the woods after picking up a backpack to escape for her life.

The games were programmed using sophisticated gadgets, and that many traps were set to ensure that eventually only one survives. To prevent further riots, the Gamemakers announced a new rule midway through it-two tributes from the same district can win the Games as a pair. Thus, Katniss tries to find Peeta, who is wounded by a sword. She portrays love towards Peeta as she nurses him back to health to gain audience favourship. Rue gave many life-saving tips to Katniss, (e.g. blowing out the food supply of the careers, dropping a tracker jacket nest to kill the Careers) but was killed by Marvel by driving his sword into her abdomen. Clove assaults Katniss during her attempt to get medicine for Peeta, but Thresh took the life of Clove in memory of Rue. The female tribute from District 5, "Foxface" died after consuming the poisonous nightlock berries which she had stolen from Katniss and Peeta. Meanwhile, when there are only three tributes left in the Finale, a pack of helish "muttations" are created and released, killing Thresh and forcing the duo into Cato's hands. Katniss shoots Cato with an arrow to rescue Peeta. Cato then fell to the muttations, and Katniss shoots him again to end his sufferings.

To ensure that there is only one victor left, the Gamemakers withdraw the rule change so as to force Katniss and Peeta into a fierce battle. Betting that the Gamemakers would rather have tweo victors than none, Katniss revealed a handful of nightlock berries and gave part of them to Peeta. Upon realizing that they intend to commit suicide, the Gamemakers announced that both are the victors for the 74th Hunger Games.

As for Seneca, the head Gamemaker, he was forced to commit suicide at the end of the novel for failing to produce only one victor. He was locked in a room, with only nightlock berries.

To me, the movie is extremely thrilling, especially during the scenes in which the tributes battle all out for their lives.  However, the bloodbath is quite scary LOL.

I find the fashion in the Capitol wacky. Seriously, I laughed out loud when I watched it! Okay, follow the etiquette. I just chuckled. Coloured skin, weird makeup, high-end suits, and all.

The part in which Katniss nursed Peeta is quite romantic! XD (Peeta has expressed his love towards Katniss during the pre-games interview, which had angered her. However, this helps gain sympathy from the audiences... XP)

However, the scene in which Rue was killed by Marvel is depressing and sad. She has became allies with Katniss during the Games and helped her in many ways. The riot which arose in District 11 following Rue's demise further magnified the emotions in the scene. (Breakdown!!!)

The movie reached its climax when only Cato, Katniss and Peeta were left in the Finale with the muttations. It was kind of gory when I saw Cato with half of his face eaten, threatening Katniss while helding Peeta. Eventually Katniss shot Cato when he fell to the muttations, to end his agony.

I love the ending as well. Both Katniss and Peeta are announced as the victors of the 74th Annual Hunger Games, thanks to their quick wits in sharing the poisonous nightlock berries to make the Gamemakers stick to the new rule. Seneca got punished to commit suicide by getting locked in a room with only nightlock berries-you know what I mean.

Just a brief review, but I have to rack my brain for this! Plus, I'm going to buy the Hunger Games Trilogy via my sister soon! Reading the synopsis via Wikipedia has attracted me to reading more of it! Best of all, the entire set is sold at less than RM50! I bet by the book arrives, I will be locking myself in the room and munch on the story. Ha ha!!!
